The lost art of written connections
NOVEMBER 1, 2022
October brought me another Birthday, thankfully. Every year as my birthday and the holiday season approach I find myself thinking about the lost art of written communication. What do you mean, you may ask? Well, it stems from cards. Cards in the mail used to be part of every milestone, event, and holiday. Cards were like the little treats leading up to your birthday or a holiday. But nowadays, there will most likely be no birthday cards in the mailbox. I don’t know about you but I still hope as I walk to the mailbox that there will be a birthday card in there! And when there is not, I tell myself, you are too old to get birthday cards anymore! Hmm, but that really can’t be it. No one is too old or too young to receive a card full of good wishes and sweet words. So, when did cards stop coming, I ponder. And I’m not talking about just Birthday cards; Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Anniversaries, Retirement, Get Well, or the occasional “Thinking of you” card, etc. I don’t know. Could it be age, could it be when I stopped sending them to others? Do you need to send them to receive them? Or has the practice simply become an antiquated ritual of the past?
I realize I might be the minority here, I am one of those that save every card I received. Yes, I have them safely stored in a lovely box in my closet. For what you ask? Well, one year for my cousin’s birthday, I sent her the card she sent me for my 16th Birthday and she was overjoyed. Thought it was the best thing ever. Point made. Well now you won’t be surprised that I also used to be the person that sent cards to everyone in my life, for every occasion, I enjoyed and loved it, it was like a hobby. And I did not expect one-for-one back. I also loved writing letters and receiving letters. Postcards too. Handwriting any communication is truly a lost art. Come to think of it, my love of written communication is probably why I enjoy writing this blog. For many years of my life, I was a faithful journal keeper. Still have them. But that is for another blog, lol. I shouldn’t admit this because it will tell my age but some of us remember passing notes in class or finding an anonymous love letter in our locker or on our car. Aww, those were the days. Have you heard that students aren’t even taught cursive anymore? That makes me sad. But those days are gone for good I am sure.
However, there must still be hope for sending cards. It stands to reason that somewhere along the line if the mere fact is that my life got too busy or hard or hectic and I became emotionally distant and too reliant on modern means of communication, causing me to lose the habit of carrying out this meaningful ritual myself, so must have many others. I recall when I had started dropping the ball, for a lack of better words, it haunted me. I felt so bad if I did happen to receive a card from someone that I knew I had missed an occasion for them. Even though I never expected one in return, I felt so guilty if I had not sent one! Every Christmas card I received, I did a mental check, did I send them one?! And if I didn’t, is there still time to send it? LOL, I am sure I am not alone in that outrageous way of thinking.
I think the elephant in the room, or should I say in this blog is Social Media. Cards and notes have been replaced with a post on your wall wishing you a Happy Birthday or Anniversary, or Hanukkah, even a Get Well or I miss you post. You might receive a GIF or Meme pic, and don’t forget a memory shared. I have a love-hate relationship with those. Again, that is for another blog. Anyway, the sentiments come in various ways from those you know, and oddly enough, those you don’t.
We can delve even deeper into this communication vs connection topic with phone calls. Does anyone talk on the phone anymore? Do you cringe when your phone rings as if it was someone knocking on your door unexpectedly? Or are you like someone else I know and simply keep your ringer off at all times? In the olden days (I jest), on holidays and Birthdays, your phone would ring throughout the day with well-wishers and you would make sure you were doing the calling too. Seriously, I laugh when I remember being a child and my mother would always call whoever's birthday it was in the family, Aunts, Uncles, or cousins, and she’d make each one of us get on the phone to speak with them one at a time. I recall certain siblings who would try to derive when their turn would be and coincidentally have to use the bathroom to try and avoid their turn. Luckily there were 6 of us, so they never managed to escape. It was truly painful then, but now I think how wonderful that was. Who knew that was a dying trend?? I would venture an uneducated guess that the fact that little family practice is mostly gone probably has an impact on family relations, communication, and society in some, even if little, way. OH, but not to worry, we can rest assured we have texts! The easy way out for those that don’t want to speak. But actually, it is a very cool way to show you are thinking of someone, It’s such an oxymoron but it gets the job done. Someone took the time to think of you and send a message, so at least we have that.
All of this being said, after contemplating and dissecting this subject. I think the answer is clear; there is no clear answer. Again, I joke. In this day and age, we have more ways to communicate than ever. But do we still connect? Think about that. I believe maybe we all can strengthen our “connections” by bringing back the meaningful ritual of sending cards. One because they are awesome and touching to receive, and two, because it’ is so heartwarming to send. I remember how much joy it brought me to pick the perfect card for someone. And I have to admit sometimes tears. Yes, there were occasions when I was brought to tears reading cards at the card store. Truth. I loved a nice card store, do they even exist anymore? I loved to write a nice note and address it with my calligraphy pen, then apply my personalized return address label and decorative stamp then place it in the mailbox and imagine how it would hopefully make a nice little surprise for the recipient when they opened their mail. I miss doing all of that so much & want to create that joy again for myself and want to send that positive vibe out into the universe again. Imagine the little difference we can make in mailboxes all over! Move over Amazon. So let’s do it. I Lizz, hereby pledge to start this month by sending Christmas cards again. Yes, I am, and I am so excited to do it. We can always communicate on Social Media, but let us all start connecting again. So I guess I will end here as I have to go and find a card store and buy stamps! LOL. Happy writing… ❤️

Do you remember, fun filled fall?
|
Or it simply caused a lesson learned about how valuable and precious time & life is. On the flip side we cannot forget some people took such hard hits that they have not been able to bounce back yet. The good thing is, there are signs every single day, the chance to do so grows stronger. The chance to rebuild, even if not easy, there is the chance. Opportunities are opening up all around us. Faith is the rope that will get us all where we want to be. We just have to grab it with both hands and never lose faith. Hold on and keep going.
If you were to ask where I feel like I fall in the poll, I would say somewhere in the middle of the 34 percentile of, life has not returned to normal & the 52 of, somewhat has. But I keep the faith and every day a little more normalcy returns. So, what better time than September to do something you haven't done in a long time? Appropriately, the song of the same name by Earth, Wind, & Fire is going through my head, so I had to play it. Such a great song for this very time. I highly encourage you to listen while you read. You'll be glad you did! I love those lyrics like "dancin the night away", "chasin clouds away", "golden dreams were shiny days". AHH... it really does the spirit good. With that being said, lets not allow our hiatuses of recent years stop us from getting back to the things we loved doing. Plan that party, attend that Fall festival! Experience, savor, and enjoy all your favorite holiday traditions once again or start new ones! Just remember, whatever and whenever you do, it might be a little difficult to prepare for, that's okay. It might not be "perfect", who cares. It might be just a little different. But so what, you know why? Because it will be good for your soul, and that, my friend, will be so incredibly worth it. |
Looking forward to seeing your comments, and hearing about your traditions (new & old) & plans for the Fall & holiday season
What is your zen?

Summer is coming to a close, another season passing. The last few years have undoubtedly made some of us lose our introspection and some of us have luckily had the time to find it. Bottom line is, we all need to have self reflection moments. If you have already discovered your meditative zone, please share it with us. For those of us who have lost, or maybe never found it, we can help each other achieve it. So Goddesses, what is, or what was, your zen energy, what gives you your peace and calm? Do you find your serenity in watching and waiting for that perfect wave and then boldly riding it in amazing blue waters, or do you find tranquility with your toes in the warm sand, and a bubbly mimosa in your hand, while the hot, bright sun beats down on your relaxed body? Is it watching the brilliant colors of the sunset on the beach on a peaceful, breezy evening? Maybe you are a little more adventurous and what centers your soul is navigating your kayak on a flowing river with the beautiful sound and sights of nature surrounding you. Hiking or biking through majestic nature trails undoubtedly brings calm, peace, and self care to some of us. Understandably for some it is hosting a fun-filled barbecue with lots of great friends and abundant laughter accompanied by some lovely wine or spirited cocktails. Laughter does the heart good. Our calmness and quiet might also be found sitting on the patio with a steaming hot cup of tea, admiring the beautiful star filled night sky above. Whatever it is that works for each of us, we need to make the effort to do it. Don't ever stop. Let's keep encouraging each other and sharing our best practices, so we can all stay centered and balanced. Remember always, meditate, breathe and focus on your inner peace and well-being. It is so important, it is everything. #goddess
